Brief description

In This book (The water in Sardinia) the authors affront the problem of the water in an arid island. The 20th century has seen great changes in the way Europeans use water. At the beginning of the century and in recent decades, the government launched e massive dam-building program aimed at bringing irrigation – and people – to the island. Dam were raised across rivers around the country, providing water for agriculture, protection against floods and electricity to power the industrial development. By damming, pumping, draining, and diverting water great areas are transformed. A growing popolation requires more needs and increases demands for clean, fresh water, but like the rest of the European continent, in recent decades Sardinians have begun to feel the limits of their water supply. The book describes the surface water and groundwater in the island: rivers, hydrographic basins, artificil lakes and the environment. In particular it describes the rocks containig the water, the types of hydrographic basins and the problem connected with overpumping and contamination of groundwater that have, in some areas, sharply reduced the amount of fresh water available
