This book (Sardinia the underground world), describes the underground world in Sardinia, an island rich in caves and where longest known cave in the Italy can be found, with more than 32 km of explored and mapped passageways. There are many caves on the island, some of which are very long and decorated with magnificent concretions. In the varied landscape of Sardinia many types of rocks are present. Where the soft rocks dominate, limestone and dolomites most natural caves are present (or caverns), and features in them, are the result of erosion, solution, and deposition by ground water in carbonate rocks. In Sardinia more of 2000 caves are present, some of them are very long and deep and very rich in stalactites, stalagmites, columns, flowstone draperies, dripstones, calcite (gypsum) flowers, and various marvellous concretions in various forms. In the book also are aexplained how caves are formed in the island. Virtualy all major caves are formed by dissolving action of underground water within soluble bedrock - limestone, dolomite, marble and gypsum are most comon rocks of this type.
